1st November, 2012             Meg Heyworth masterclass At our regular meeting this evening, we departed from our usual format. Instead, members of   the club were treated to a public speaking masterclass by one of our most prominent members, Meg Heyworth. In this workshop, each member of the group was asked to read a 3 minute story to the audience. However, there was catch! Prior to reading the story, the speaker had to select a card from a pack,  and on this card were instructions describing how the speech was to be delivered. Some examples were: the story begins with a happy tone of voice but gradually becomes more sad the story begins with a loud tone of voice but ends on a whisper every three words of the story must alternate between a high, medium and low pitched voice the story must be delivered in a dramatic, exaggerated tone of voice Needless to say, this proved to be very challenging indeed for all the speakers! The workshop clearly demonstrated that effective public speaking is about more than just preparing an interesting text. As the old saying goes: “It’s not what you say but how you say it”. Megs’s workshop was ample proof of this fact!
29th November, 2012             Extra meeting in November We are pleased to announce an extra meeting this month at the Burlington Hotel. It will be held on Thursday 29th November. Please arrive around 7:15 pm for a prompt 7:30 start. All are welcome.
1st January 2013             Changed to advertised meeting dates In response to feedback from our members, we have amended the dates of the scheduled meetings for next January. The meetings at the Burlington Hotel will now be held on January 10th and January 24th. This will afford a longer holiday break to our members, who now have more time to prepare their speeches for the first club meeting of 2013. But in February the club will once again return to the usual pattern of holding gatherings on the first and third Thursday of every month. See the Meetings calendar for dates of all the scheduled meetings through to March.
30th December, 2012          Happy New Year !! We would like to take the opportunity to wish all our Members, Family and Friends a Happy and Prosperous New Year in 2013. And Best Wishes to our fellow Toastmaster clubs in Sussex !! 2012 was a great year for Worthing Speakers Club. We moved to our new venue at the Burlington Hotel, the Library event in November was a great success and we have continued to increase our active membership. Next year promises to be even better, with a full programme of regular meetings and special events. So watch this space for further news and announcements !!
March 4th 2013 Giant Steps towards full Toastmasters membership
Regular readers of this website will know that Worthing Speakers Club is informally linked to Toastmasters International. However, we are not yet a fully chartered member. Well, all of that is about to change!  Since moving our regular meetings to the Burlington Hotel in 2012, the club has gone from strength to strength. We have gained new members, the level of active participation has measurably increased and the future of the club is looking very bright indeed. Consequently, the Committee have decided that the time is now ripe to apply for full chartered status of Toastmasters  International. This will bring many new benefits and opportunities to members of Worthing Speakers Club:  Each member will receive a copy of the highly informative monthly Toastmasters magazine  Members will gain full access to all the Toastmaster website resources  Official recognition of your Toastmaster achievements with Award certificates  Eligibility to enter and attend Club, Area, Division and District contests and conferences
Needless to say, this represents outstanding value for money, as even a one hour tuition session for training/coaching on public speaking would  cost an awful lot more than £39. So overall, the membership fee provides EXCELLENT value for money, which represents a small investment in YOUR future. Remember that public speaking skills are in demand more now than they have ever been.
Of course, for any member of the community that wishes to just come along and sample what the club has to offer, the first two meetings will remain free of charge.
We like to think that Worthing Speakers Club is the best public speaking club in Sussex. And now we aim to make it even better ! In fact, we are all working very hard to make Worthing Speakers the very best Toastmasters International club on the South Coast!!
If you have any concerns or questions about our plans to attain full Toastmasters status, please get in touch with Kieran via our Contact page.
As an additional 'value added' service to members, we are planning to arrange a series of “one to one” mentoring sessions.
In order to finance these changes, we will be moving away from our present method of collecting a £2.00 fee at each meeting. Instead, the club Committee has decided to implement to a system of advance payment of membership fees.  Members will now be required to pay a six months membership fee of £39, commencing 1st April 2013. This will give members access to all of the club meetings and resources right through until the end of September.
